Who Keeps the Dog?
On the 10th June 2025 The Family Law Amendment Act 2024 (Cth) was introduced, making changes to the Family Law Act 1975 (Family Law Act). This affects family law professionals and users of the family law system. One of the changes implemented as part of this Act was the introduction of a framework for dealing with family pets.
Karis Nafte, pet custody mediator, certified dog behaviour consultant, author and educator, has written the book “Who keeps the dog: Navigating pet custody during divorce”. This compassionate guide covers subjects such as shared vs sole custody of pets, how to handle visitations, the laws around pet custody, the best way to factor children into the decision, differences in dog breeds, and common mistakes to avoid. Her information aims to equip mediators and lawyers, as well as dog professionals, with the knowledge and tools to support clients when resolving pet custody issues.
Pet custody disputes have become a significant and emotionally charged issue in many separations. Treating pets as property or children, neither of which take into account their perspective and well being, can lead to anxiety, behavioural problems, and harmful custody agreements that diminish their quality of life.
